At the most basic level, a photograph is a moment captured from a specific vantage point–a representation, not simply re-presenting ‘the real’ but, especially in contemporary culture, creating our sense of reality. As Susan Sontag writes, “Photographed images do not seem to be statements about the world so much as pieces of it, miniatures of reality.” Vantage Point seeks to highlight artists who push the boundaries of what an image is, who confront anticipated vantage points and in turn challenge viewers to consider the complexities of perception and representation.
