Looking forward to participating on Thoughts on Duchamp for UAAC 2024.
Chair: Julian Jason Haladyn, OCAD University

The modernist artist Marcel Duchamp remains a vital part of contemporary art and thought. His work, in addition to being a core part of the history of art, has had major impacts on ideas and practices of visual production around the world. This panel invites papers that explore the impacts of Duchamp's art, practice and ideas in the current moment. This can include two main approaches: first, direct explorations that engage with histories related to Duchamp's work and history or, second, indirect examinations of his ideas in the work of other creators. The goal of this panel is to share thoughts and ideas on the role of Duchamp today.

Thoughts on Duchamp
Collage can loosely be defined as bringing together fragments. With this concept in mind, it is logical to explore Marcel Duchamp’s Readymades through the lens of collage and assemblage. However, this paper, Duchamp’s Collages, proposes a new reading of Duchamp, bringing attention and value to an often-overlooked element of his practice: his collages on paper. Drawing from key collage works such as Back Cover for View Magazine, vol. 5, no. 1, March 1945, Etant Donnés, 1966, La boîte de 1914, 1913-1914, Monte Carlo Bonds, 1924, In the Manner of Delvaux, 1942 and Réflection à main (Hand Reflection), 1948, this research challenges the traditional focus on his three dimensional Readymades, offering a broader understanding Duchamp’s contributes to our understanding of modern art.
